When You Discover Your Child Is a Geek

"Ma'am, there's nothing wrong with your son. He's a born explorer. Did you know that all children are born scientists? Some stay that way their whole lives and make it their profession. Others are forced to postpone it, or to do it only in their spare time. But the curiosity to understand the world and how it works is still there. It's genetic — but it can also be learned, and caught. Your son is going to be a geek."

I said exactly that to a mother who came to my office worried because her seven-year-old had taken apart the TV remote control for the third time that month. She was expecting me to say something about attention deficit. I ended up talking to her about evolutionary biology.

Because there, sitting in front of me, I didn't have a child with a problem. I had a seven-year-old scientist doing exactly what a scientist does: asking a question ("what's inside this that makes it work?"), designing an experiment (taking it apart), and accepting the risk of failure (that the remote would never go back together). The only difference between him and a laboratory researcher is the budget — and the parents' permission.

After that visit I started noticing, almost without meaning to, the signs that tend to appear early in these children. It's not a clinical list — I'm not trying to diagnose anyone — it's more a catalog of things I've seen repeat themselves, in my children, in my patients, and if I'm honest, in myself when I was a child.

  1. He doesn't just play with his toys: he takes them apart. But not to destroy them — to know how they work inside. That is the difference between mischief and method.
  2. He is an insatiable questioner. "Why." And then: "but why." And when he thinks he has run out of the adult's patience, he finds the strength for one more "why."
  3. He has a particular passion for tools, for mechanics, for anything that moves. A screwdriver in his hands is not a dangerous object. It's a key.
  4. He shows a remarkable capacity for abstraction: he can stay still, in silence, observing something for a long while. Don't be alarmed if you see him like that — he is thinking, he is analyzing, and the worst thing an adult can do at that moment is interrupt him.
  5. When he is focused on assembling or building something with his hands, no force in the world can pull him out of there. Not even the motherly call to come eat.
  6. He struggles to connect with other children who don't share that same curiosity. He's not antisocial — he simply finds nothing to talk about with someone who isn't interested in why things work the way they do.

And here are four more that I would add to that list, because I have seen them appear just as often:

  1. He prefers to understand the "why" before memorizing the "what." He resists, almost by instinct, learning something by heart if nobody explains the logic behind it.
  2. He collects things — stones, insects, bottle caps, loose cables — and classifies them with a logic of his own, often incomprehensible to the rest of the family, but perfectly coherent to him.
  3. He doesn't follow the rules of the toy as they come in the box. He invents new uses, combines pieces from different toys, and ends up with an invention that looks like nothing sold in any store.
  4. He gets more frustrated by not understanding something than by losing or failing at a game. He can accept losing a race. What he can't stand is not knowing why he lost.

Now — here is what seems crucial to me, and it's probably not said often enough: curiosity is genetic, yes, some temperaments are more exploratory than others from the cradle, but it is also contagious. A child raised around adults who ask questions, who say "I don't know, let's find out" instead of "because I said so," is much more likely to keep that spark than one raised in an environment where asking feels like a nuisance.

So how do you handle a geek child, if you're lucky enough to identify one at home? I don't have a formula, but I do have a conviction: it's not about steering that curiosity where we would like it to go, but about not putting it out while it finds its own channel. The dismantled remote control is not a problem to fix. It's a question that deserves an answer — or better yet, it deserves the tools for the child to find the answer himself.

I gave the remote back to that mother — well, what was left of it — and I suggested that, instead of hiding the next device her son wanted to take apart, she buy him an old one, one of those that no longer work, specifically so he could open it without guilt.

She laughed and told me that was a lot of work. I told her yes — raising a geek is a lot of work. But the alternative — a forty-year-old adult who one day wonders why he stopped asking questions — probably costs more.

I'm still not sure I followed my own advice. But I hope I did.
